40 for 40 Gala Dinner 4th June 2016
The stage was set for the Gala Dinner. The hall was decorated pretty as a princess, ready for a Gala evening, with silver balloons on the ceiling & the tables laid up in classic white & silver to compliment.
After many months of planning, testing, tasting, costing, fretting and shopping, the sub-committee, headed by Ros were ready behind the scenes in the kitchen while Rachel ,the new chair of the Memorial Hall committee, popped the corks on the Prosecco to greet the guests as they arrived.
The food, cooked to a very high standard both looked and tasted delicious. The chatter on the tables continued through the evening unabated. A raffle for some very nice wine, champagne, whisky & fresh produce hampers was drawn after a light hearted and amusing
speech by Somerby’s own mystery writer, Colin , bringing the main part of the evening to a close. The following morning, there was one heck of a pile of washing up to
do but by 11am, the hall was back to its practical every day state, save for the odd balloon slowly sinking to the ground.
The dinner was held to bring to a conclusion the 40 for 40 fundraising campaign to give the hall a face lift. After expenses, the evening raised a very fine £581.02 . Thanks to the whole committee for their efforts but particularly our cooks & waitress. Thanks also to Lynne for originally suggesting the idea of both the campaign & the dinner- it has certainly been a fun & interesting year. It is hoped that work will commence later this summer to spruce the hall up for her next 40 years!
It is a busy time for the Memorial Hall. This week we had a visit from BBC Radio Leicester and their team of gardening experts to record an edition of the long running “Down to Earth” programme . It was a fun evening with a good variety of interesting questions.. this edition will be broadcast on Sunday 8th May but check listings for broadcast time, it should be 12 noon after CLUELESS.
Continuing the horticultural theme, on Sunday 1st May, we held a PLANT SWAP & SALE from 12noon til 3pm. A steady stream of visitors came along, some with pots of plants to swap , some with barrow loads of goodies to share. Plants were swapped, as were plant tales and gardening tips. Others turned up just to buy. It didn’t matter there was enough variety to please everyone, even the couple who had been out for a walk, came in for tea and left with two trees! If you didn’t get along this time, keep your eyes peeled for next year’s event.
At the beginning of June, we are holding a GALA DINNER, a three course fine dining treat created and cooked by several members of the Memorial Hall Committee all for £25 per head. Details are on the GALA DINNER page… below you can see members of the committee having a taster session at a recent meeting
We look forward to welcoming you – Somerby Memorial Hall is there for all of the community
